Objective

After passing this course, the students will know and understand the composition of the atmosphere and the basic chemical processes that control it. They will be able to explain and analyse how different conditions change the atmospheric composition. This includes stratospheric and tropospheric chemistry, and the effects of both natural and human-made sources of atmospheric constituents, in particular the gas- and condensed-(aqueous-)phase chemistry of inorganic and organic compounds, with an emphasis on secondary aerosol. The students will also be able to apply their acquired knowledge to solve problems in atmospheric chemistry and to understand the principles of relevant measurement technologies. The course develops the following generic skills: sustainability and responsibility, critical thinking, interaction and communication

Content

Atmospheric composition; basics of (photo-)chemical reactions; stratospheric and tropospheric chemistry; air pollution issues; oxide, ozone and halogen cycles; chemistry of oxidized and reduced nitrogen and sulfur; chemistry of organics; natural and human-made sources; aqueous phase chemistry; measurement techniques.
