Objective

Learning outcomes: A successful student • is able to identify and formulate a research problem • knows the relevant academic research on the topic and • is able to apply academic research methods to the problem and evaluate the results The course develops the following work life skills: Project management, creativity, time management and prioritisation, argumentation skills, systematic thinking, managing large entities, research skills and critical thinking, IT skills (Office), and language skills

Content

The Pro gradu thesis is written in English and it is based on student’s own, independent research in the field of English language or English-language literature and culture. The recommended length of the thesis is ca. 17,000–20,000 words. The thesis should include a one-page abstracts in Finnish and English. A separate abstract form is available on the website of the School of Humanities. The topic of thesis is usually proposed by the student, and it is discussed with the supervisor. The thesis is usually supervised by a Professor of the subject area but other supervisors can also be appointed.

Accomplishment methods

Modes of study: Supervised independent work (810 hours). Evaluation criteria: A written thesis. The evaluation of the thesis is based on the common evaluation criteria of Master's theses of the Philosophical Faculty. The grading system is 0–5. Prior learning will not be recognized or accredited for this study unit.
