Objective
Learning outcomes: On completion of the study unit the successful student will - Be able to explain the origins and development of English in terms of its sociopolitical history - Be able to describe structural, literary and sociolinguistic changes in English through the Old, Middle and Early Modern English periods to present-day English - Be able to analyze reasons behind the change and variation in English The course develops the following work life skills: - Language skills, meaning making, competences in specific cultural domains and intercultural knowledge, argumentation skills, managing large entities, systematic thinking, time management and prioritization skills, and managing digital learning- and working environments Generic competences: internationality, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise

Origins of English, linguistic characteristics, literature and the socio-historical background of Old, Middle and Early Modern English, ongoing lexical and structural developments in present-day English
