Objective

Learning outcomes: This course develops the student’s academic writing skills in English. Successful completion of this course will prepare the student for writing the BA thesis and for future professional needs. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to write longer texts in English with the following characteristics: • proper organization in accordance with Anglophone conventions • coherent and logical strategies of argumentation and the stylistic devices that support them • fluency in English in terms of vocabulary and grammar • sensitivity to cultural differences between Finnish and Anglophone text cultures • proper citation according to discipline-specific guidelines (e.g. APA, MLA). The course develops the following work life skills: Language skills, ability to produce academic texts, intercultural skills, knowledge of multicultural and -lingual contexts and texts, skills related to specific countries, meaning making, argumentation skills, ability to give feedback, time management and prioritisation, systematic and logical thinking, information retrieval skills, research skills and critical thinking. Generic competences: digitalization, ethics, internationality, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication

Content

Students will produce different text types, such as an article summary, essay, research report, or abstract. During the course students plan and write a final essay of 2,500 words to be submitted at the end of the term. Constructive peer review is also integral to the course.

Accomplishment methods

Modes of study: Exercise course: contact lessons (20 hours) and independent work (115 hours). Final essay (2,500 words). 80% attendance in classes. Evaluation criteria: During the course students will write 4 graded short texts (40%) in addition to a final essay (60%).
