Objective

Learning outcomes: A successful student -Knows the main trends in British history, -Recognises central features in British culture and society, -Is able to discuss the role of Britain in an international context, - Understands differences between the culture of politics in Westminster, the British Nations, and at a local level, - Is able to distinguish different forms of cultural expression. The course develops the following work life skills: Language skills, multidisciplinarity, socio-cultural knowledge and competencies related to a specific country, basic research skills, meaning-making, time management and prioritization skills Generic competences: ethics, internationality, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication

Content

The course deals with the history, geography, society and culture of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It will provide an understanding of the development and current state of the nation’s most central institutions (e.g. governance, political parties and elections) and will look at such centres of power as the regional and central government(s). Furthermore, other expressions of culture – arts, education, media, multi-ethnicity and pressure groups will be discussed within the role of Britain in an international context. Students will be presented with a variety of sources covering the different aspects relevant to this course. Working in small groups, students will co-operate to provide answers to topical questions which are set prior to each Review Session.

Accomplishment methods

Modes of study: Seminars and Review Sessions (10hrs; 80% attendance required); independent work (55h). Evaluation criteria: Students have to submit a piece of coursework. Coursework submissions will present a written, detailed answer (ca. 3,000 words) developed by each study group, addressing key aspects of their choice covered in the module. Attendance record (min. 80%).
