Objective

Learning outcomes: After completing the course the student is familiar with the basic terminology of contact linguistics and multilingualism and knows how languages influence each other and how crosslinguistic influence can be studied. They are also able to use the learned concepts to analyse their own mono- or multilingual identity, their abilities to use different languages and the overall linguistic situation in their own country.

Content

The course deals with the following topics: history of contact linguistics, defining a language contact, multilingualism in societies, linguistic diversity, endangered languages & language death, multilingual individuals & language acquisition, language attrition, multilingual interaction & code-switching, contact-induced language changes (borrowing, substrate influence), linguistic areas, contact languages.
