Professional Training of Radiation TherapyLaajuus (9 cr)

Objective

The student is able to identify the special features of nursing care for patients undergoing radiation therapy and their next of kin. The student is able to demonstrate ability to localize the radiation therapy fields and treat patients with radiation therapy. The students is able to carry out client centred, personal and holistic art of radiation therapy. The student is able to analyse the meaning of a radiographer´s good quality and safe work in the care of a radiation therapy patient and carries it out. The students is able to document electrically. The students identifies his/her responsibility in maintenance of secrecy of patients´ information and complies the practice of privacy protection. The students is able to apply the first aid readiness and help the patient when first aid is needed. The student is able to apply the principles of financially and ecologically sustainable development in the art of radiation therapy and justify his/her actions according to the aspects of ethically, morally and socially sustainable development. The student is able to work in the interprofessional team in the radiation therapy unit. The students is able to act according to good working skills. The student is able to carry out a teaching session. The students is able to forecast and prepare for acting in an emergency situation.

Effects of radiation therapy. External and internal radiation therapy. Radiation protection in radiation therapy. Basics of radiation therapy planning. Radiation field localisation and radiation therapy treatments. Side effects of radiation therapy. Personal and holistic care for patients undergoing radiation therapy and the methods in the art of radiation therapy. Ethical issues in radiation therapy. Quality assurance of the art of radiation therapy. Elements of good quality of care in the art of radiation therapy. Radiation therapy equipment and quality assurance. Radiographer´s role in the interprofessional collaboration.

Qualifications

OQ00CT78 Radiation Therapy and Radiation Therapy Equipment (5 ECTS) and OQ00CT79 Cancer Patient´s Health Promotion (3 ECTS) and the drug dosage calculation test have been passed.
