Objective

After completing the course, the student is able to explain the key elements and concepts of the urban structure, urban space and townscape. The student can explain the key stages of Finnish urban development. The student is able to analyse, explain in writing and visually presenting the key elements of urban form, urban space and townscape. The student is able to evaluate and analyse the development needs of an urban space and apply the insights in preparing a small-scale urban space design project.

Content

The study unit introduces and discusses the key elements of urban form, urban space and townscape, the methods of urban analysis, the historical development of Finnish cities, with an emphasis of the 20th and 21st centuries. The course exercise consists of a small-scale urban design project.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The evaluation is based on the outcome of the two phased design project (group project ¼ of grade, the exam ¼ and individual design project ½).

Further information

1st year Bachelor students. The study unit replaces the study unit 454522P Basics of Urban Design. This study unit is taught entirely in Finnish and intended for registered bachelor level students of the Oulu School of Architecture only.

Execution methods

Contact teaching 14 hrs of lectures + 36 hrs of contact teaching in design studio and 85 hrs of independent studying. 135 hrs in total.
