Understanding Your Own Culture (2op)

Note: This course may be taken only after successful completion of XICP0211 Introduction to Intercultural Communication or a similar course.

Participants apply models and theories of Intercultural Communication, as introduced in XICP0211 Introduction to Intercultural Communication, to their own culture.

After successful completion, participants are able to describe their own culture in the terminology of Intercultural Communication, and are able to predict problems in communication with cultures in different parts of the world.

Sisältö

Self-study. Participants acquaint themselves with descriptions of their own culture in renowned works on intercultural communication. (A reading list and detailed instructions will be sent at the start of the self-study period.) They will then produce a 5-7 page essay, describing their own culture, and predicting problems in communication with cultures in different parts of the world.

Toteutustavat

Self-study. Two students of the same cultural background may cooperate in this course. They will work on the assignment together and hand in their essay together. This provides participants with the valuable opportunity to reflect on individual differences in their understanding of their own culture.
