Objective

Doctoral candidates will be able to:
- apply service design and other fieldwork methods in order to create a service concept
- create research design for their service design cases
- apply practice-based research approach in their service design cases.

Content

The course will focus on practise-based research, action research and design research where the practical and pragmatic service design process generates data, knowledge and expertise. Service design project case will be used for learning how to document and collect data during the project process, how to analyse and share their findings within the research group. Course participants will define a research question related to the project. As an outcome the students will present their conference concepts and a written report, which will demonstrate their collected data set, methods for analysing it and main findings.

Qualifications

The course is organised for doctoral candidates at the University of Lapland, in the doctoral programme the Arctic in a Changing World. It may be possible to join the course from outside the programme if there are places.

Execution methods

The course will consist of practical design work in a service design research project, lectures and an essay. This course is preferably an in situ course.

Accomplishment methods

To successfully complete the course, the doctoral candidate needs to:
- actively participate in the course
- complete assignments required by the professor.
