Osaamistavoitteet

Students will become familiar with a broad spectrum of English-language children's literature spanning several eras. They will explore the themes and language features of these texts and develop their ability to analyze children's (and other) literature.

Sisältö

The exploration of themes and language within a variety of texts, including classic stories, fairytales and myths, as well as contemporary children’s stories and young adult literature.

5 - 1/fail based on class discussions, the oral presentation, and the two essays.

Photocopies of the texts for class discussion will be given by the teacher. Students are responsible for finding their own copies of the books for the papers and presentation described above.

Toteutustavat

- Contact teaching 30 h,
- Independent individual study approx. 30 h,
- Independent small group work approx. 30 h.
- Discussions in class of the set texts.
- Homework: reading and preparation of texts for class discussions. Two books to be chosen and read for essays and oral presentation.

Suoritustavat

All texts to be read and highlighted in preparation for class discussions. Assessment based upon:
1) Active participation in class discussions,
2) The reading of two books of the student’s own choice leading to: a) A short essay about each book giving basic information about the author and the plot of the book, a brief analysis of some interesting features of the book, and the student's own opinion of the book; these essays will be collected as part of a class anthology to be distributed at the end of the course, b) An in-class oral presentation about one of the books.
