Objective

After completing this course, the doctoral researcher is able to:
- compherend art in a broad perspective and gain an understanding of the concepts required to be conversant in debates in the field
- reflect on the definition of art as a philosophical problem.

Content

The nature and definition of art. The history of definitions of art, the phases in defining it, attempts to solve the problems and principal debates. The value assigned to art and classification of art. The relation of art to life and aesthetics from the artist’s perspective.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

0 Fail
Performances are very incomplete, incorrect, or contain significant misunderstandings. Based on these, it cannot be concluded that the learning objectives have been achieved. The content produced is fragmented and not relevant to the topic and content of the course.

1 Sufficient
Performances are brief, superficial, or poorly meet the assignment requirements. The performances show that the doctoral researcher understands the course topics only slightly; they are presented unstructured, disconnected from each other, or one-sidedly and may contain ambiguities or errors. The course content has been dealt with very superficially and fragmentedly. The learning objectives have been achieved poorly.

2 Satisfactory
Performances are brief, superficial, or poorly meet the assignment requirements. The performances show that the doctoral researcher understands the course topics, but they are presented unstructured, disconnected from each other, or one-sidedly. The course content has been dealt with somewhat superficially, the connections between the issues remain somewhat unclear, and independent reflection is somewhat lacking. The learning objectives have been achieved satisfactorily.

3 Good
Performances meet the assignment requirements, demonstrate understanding and the ability to justify. The doctoral researcher has formed an overall picture of the course topics, but there may be some deficiencies. The course content is well managed and handled reflectively and interrelatedly. The learning objectives have been achieved well.

4 Very Good
Performances meet the assignment requirements, demonstrate understanding and the ability to analyze and justify. The doctoral researcher has formed an overall picture of the course topics and can summarize the essentials. The outputs contain reflection in which issues are somewhat related to each other. The handling of the course content is somewhat analytical and systematically managed, including well-founded independent thinking and demonstrating general academic skills. The learning objectives have been achieved commendably.

5 Excellent
Performances grasp a broad whole and can apply the knowledge in a multi-dimensional way or place it in different contexts. The performances demonstrate an independent approach and insight, forming a coherent whole that contains well-founded original thinking or systematic, structured, and analytical text and critical reflection. The handling of the course content is diverse and highly analytical, the choices are excellently argued, and the performances contain well-founded independent thinking. Both the general academic learning objectives and the course-specific learning objectives have been achieved excellently. The performances are overall diverse and form a comprehensive, structured, and carefully crafted whole, drawing extensively from the course content.
