Seminar Presentation and Opposing
The student presents their doctoral dissertation to the Faculty of Arts in an open seminar, where the work will be opposed by an internal opponent from the faculty. Seminar participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion about the dissertation. The opponent may be a faculty member who has completed a doctoral degree or another graduate student. At this stage, the dissertation must be ready for pre-examination and must be submitted in advance to the opponent for review. The student's readiness to present in the seminar is determined by the principal supervisor before the seminar invitation is sent. The seminar and the opposition must be completed before the dissertation is submitted for pre-examination. The principal supervisor will issue the performance grade. (Approved/Rejected)
The main supervisor is looking for a suitable opponent for the dissertation manuscript before granting the pre-examination permission. The seminar session includes the doctoral student, all supervisors, and the opponent.
The opponent and the doctoral student discuss, with the opponent asking key questions. The opponent presents a list of necessary revisions. The supervisors ensure that the revisions are made before sending the manuscript for pre-examination. The criteria for the opponent’s review are the minimum requirements outlined for the dissertation in the doctoral program guide.
Transitional Clause for the Graduate Study Guide
Graduate students who have already started their studies have the option to choose whether they will continue under the old curriculum requirements or transition to the new ones. Graduate students admitted in the fall 2024 intake will follow the new requirements.
However, the updated guidelines for participation in the faculty's open graduate seminar apply to all graduate students of the Faculty of Arts starting from the approval of this transitional clause (7.11.2024).
