Objective

The objective is to learn vocabulary, structures, and phrases needed in ordinary everyday situations (e.g. greeting, presenting oneself, shopping).

Having completed the course, the student is able
1) to tell about him/herself and answer simple questions concerning him/herself using short sentences
2) to use simple forms of courtesy and recognize a limited number of ordinary words and phrases from slow, clear speech - for example numbers and greetings
3) to recognize a small number of familiar words and phrases from easy text and are able to associate them with pictures
4) to achieve the level A1.2 of the CEFR (the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Content

The course focuses on accumulating the most important basic vocabulary needed in everyday situations, practicing speech comprehension, and practicing the most important structures regarding basic-level speech.

Qualifications

The course starts from the very basics.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

5-1/fail based on class work, homework, and the final exam.

Timing: Autumn and spring term.

Please note that Survival Finnish is not adequate preparation for the Finnish for Foreigners 2 course. Students who intend to study Finnish for at least half a year should start with Finnish for Foreigners 1.

Execution methods

Group meetings 24 hours and independent work 30 hours. The course includes individual, pair and small group work as well as discussion exercises.

Accomplishment methods

Regular attendance (80%) in group meetings, active participation in exercises, completing individual and group assignments. Final exam.
