Osaamistavoitteet

The course aims at providing students with a comprehensive overview of fundamental concepts and principles of the copyright systems in Europe. The course is aimed at those who have not studied the subject in detail before.

LEARNING GOALS:
After having successfully completed the course the students will be able to:
- Understand the theories and policies that underlie copyright law;
- Master knowledge of substantive law of copyright in the EU setting;
- Identify their own position and evaluate critically the developments of policies, legislations and legal interpretations of copyright in Europe;
- Make informed judgments as to whether and how the European copyright system could be reformed.

Sisältö

Copyright law provides a legal tool to protect certain types of human “creativities”. Examples include creativities expressed in novels, musical compositions, films, as well as in software. The Copyright Law course aims to give a thorough understanding of the main philosophical theories concerning the purposes and functions of the copyright system, as well as of the basic principles of copyright law within the European Union framework. Topics include theoretical foundations and historical developments of copyright law (at EU and international level), the concept of protected subject matter, the concept of authorship and term of protection, the requirements for protection and the scope of protection (exclusive rights and exceptions and limitations to the right).

Esitietovaatimukset

Copyright Law is a course for Master students, with enrollment limited to 40 students. No prior experience with intellectual property law is required.
