Objective

Students
- are able to define substance addiction and can describe the risks that predispose to dependence behaviour at an individual and community level

- are able to name and can assess legislation concerning intoxicants, substance abuse services and the possibilities of substance abuse prevention

- are able to analyse the significance of social work with substance abusers as a social, cultural and health issue

- are able to recognise and can assess/justify different treatment approaches

- are able to recognise the special problems involved in the treatment of a substance abuser

- are able to apply guidance and support methods in substance abuse prevention
