Guided Practice in Optional Professional Studies 17 ECTS
Competence Goals:
The student knows how to develop the holistic care of a client/patient with his/her nursing actions based on evidence-based information and the principles of quality nursing. The student deepens his/her multi-disciplinary expertise in planning, implementing and evaluating the given care. S/he operates in multi-professional networks in order to develop and foster his/her competence and expertise. S/he is able to use different data systems in working with clients. The student forms a holistic picture of organizational administration and recognizes administrative work as part of the holistic care of a patient/client.

Teaching methods
TC and Guided practice
The students, set their own personal goals for learning, and perform continuous self-assessment. During the guided clinical practice, the students make use of Individual Learning Diary for Guided Practice (those who commenced their studies before the year 2014)/ Guided Practice Learning Journal for Student Registered Nurses at Lapland University of Applied Sciences (those who commenced their studies in 2014 or later)Learning Journal Guided Practice . The Medication passport supports pharmacotherapy studies.
The course (Medication in Nursing) and/test in medical calculation must be passed with the approved grade before the beginning of the guided clinical practice in the 3rd, 5th and 7th term.
The working time of the students in guided practice is always 40 hours/week, of which 36 hours/week are to be done in the guided training placement, and four (4) hours/week are allocated for the written assignments related to the guided practice.The working shifts of the whole guided practice period are planned on the schedule. The working hours which occur on holidays during the weekdays (on the so called the flexible holidays) are not to compensated. In case of several holidays during the guided practice, the guided practice period is prolonged. Sickness absences must always be notified as soon as possible both to the guided practice unit and to the clinical instructor or the senior lecturer in charge of the guided practice. The replacement/compensation for the absences are to be negotiated with the clinical supervisor and the senior lecturer in charge of the guided practice

Methods:Self-assessment, clinical supervisors’ assessment, peer assessment by dialogic discussion
Competences:
Learning process of the student
Attainment of the student’s self-set competence goals, purposefulness, self-directedness, information/data retrieval, and justifying the action taken.
Self- and peer-assessment in the learning process, and feedback from the supervisors.
Ethical competence
Compliance with confidentiality, secrecy and privacy protection policies, and legislative issues, acting according to the values and principles of professional ethics, compliance with safety regulations at work, taking responsibility for own action, therapeutic attitude towards the client/patient/family/cooperation and study networks. Responsibility for own professional development.
Co-operation and communication competence
Ability to start and maintain professional communication at work: patient and client relationships, employee skills, collegiality, team-work skills, pair work skills, multi-professional work skills, co-operation with care and service units/institutions, organisations and networks. Co-operation and interaction is focused on the main objective/mission of the unit.
Mentoring and Counseling Competence
Ability to mentor and counsel different patients/clients, their next-of-kin and groups. Supports and guides the client in self-care and management of personal health problems and concerns. Health promotion competence.
Decision-making competence
Nursing process, reporting, information provision and documentation, coordination. Self-leadership competence, awareness, autonomy, positive outlook, creativity, responsibility.
Clinical competence in nursing
Identification of the biopsychosocial needs and problems of the patient/client/close network. Holistic evaluation of the patient. Planning, implementation and evaluation of the nursing interventions. Use of methods and tools in nursing. Functioning in care relationship. Examination- and nursing procedures. Ergonomy. Aseptics. Fluid therapy and pharmacotherapy.
Criteria for the grade “Fail” of Guided practice:
Student can fail the guided clinical practice based on the assessment criteria of professional, co-operational or development competencies. Guided practice can be assessed as a “Fail” based on a single criterium in the context of the following competencies:

- neglect of ethical principles, regulations, legislation,

- insufficient knowledge and skills in nursing

- non-commitment in care relationships
